LOVER BOY EP

The “Lover Boy” EP is a balancing act between three songs that look at love from three very different perspectives: romantic heartbreak, the death of a family member, and falling in love. Most of all, for me the EP is an ode to my sibling Jayme, who was in the middle of transitioning when they committed suicide.

The EP centers around the three major life events: my first heartbreak, losing Jayme, and falling in love. Each song was written like a diary entry to help me work through my emotions. I didn’t write the songs as much as live them into existence. I wrote “Boyfriend Talk” sitting in a van on tour, thumb typing into my notes app while processing a bad breakup. “You Are Loved” was an attempt to process my grief, writing in the basement of my childhood home in the days leading up to Jayme’s funeral. “Crush” was the most romantic side of me coming out in early days of a new relationship. The song topics initially didn’t seem to go together, but the contrast is part of what makes them go together so genuinely. My year was a year of extremes - these songs captured that, making it the most authentic record I could release. For me life has a wider range of emotions than would be reflected in a break up album or a grief record. I’m happy that the “Lover Boy” EP captures three experiences and sides of love that we all will go through in life: falling in love, heartbreak, and the death of someone close.
